...is it really worth it?
In the 1950s Ceramic Coating was designed for military aircraft, the goal was to create a coating that would prevent corrosion and wear. Since the 50s it's safe to say this innovation has evolved significantly, today it's applied to cars, boats, aircraft, and, of course, our cherished motorhomes and caravans.
Today we'll discuss what the big deal is with focus on our motorhomes and caravans. We'll cover:
- What Does Ceramic Coating Do
- Benefits of Ceramic Coating
- Types of Ceramic Coating
- Maintenance
- Common Myths and Misconceptions
.
What Does Ceramic Coating Do?
Essentially Ceramic Coating bonds to fiberglass providing a highly durable hydrophobic, UV-resistant, and glossy layer.
.
Hydrophobicity
This refers to the property of repelling or resisting water, basically when your motorhome is exposed to water and dirt it doesn't stick. The water beads on the surface and quickly drips away.
.
.
UV Resistance
UV resistance refers to the ability of a ceramic coating to withstand damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can cause fading, discoloration, and deterioration of surfaces over time. Ceramic coatings achieve UV resistance by forming a protective barrier that reflects or absorbs UV rays, preventing them from penetrating and damaging the underlying surface.
.
.
Glossy Sheen
Ceramic Coatings contain nano-sized particles that create a smooth and uniform layer over the paint. This smoothness allows light to reflect off the surface more evenly, resulting in a glossy finish. Additionally, ceramic coatings are designed to enhance the natural shine of the vehicle's paint, providing a deep and vibrant look.
.
Benefits of Ceramic Coating
Hydrophobicity
Prevents Oxidation
When driving (without ceramic coating), dirt, debris, water, etc bounce up and hits the surface of your caravan. This causes deterioration of the gel coating, which leads to direct exposure to the sun, hence causing oxidation
.
Simplifies Maintenance
Since ceramic coating already decreases the amount of water and dirt that bonds to surfaces this in turn keeps your caravan cleaner for much longer. Furthermore, when it comes to washing your caravan already has much less, and due to the hydrophobic layer dirt removal is significantly easier.
.
.
UV Resistance
Ceramic Coating withstands UV (ultraviolet) which more or less causes the common headache of oxidation shared across the caravan and motorhome community.
.
Glossy Sheen
The glossy sheen Ceramic Coating gives to caravans and motorhomes enhances the showroom finish of your beloved home-on-wheels
.
Types of Ceramic Coating
Ceramic Polymer
These coatings are typically applied by trained professionals and offer the highest level of protection and longevity. They often require specialized equipment and expertise to apply properly.
2 - 5 Years
SiO2 (Silica Dioxide)
Nanoparticles that bond with the surface of the vehicle, provide excellent protection against UV rays, chemicals, and environmental contaminants. Much cheaper alternative to Ceramic Polymers.
3-6 Months
.
Maintenance
Maintenance is important for ceramic coatings. Like gel coats, ceramic coatings deteriorate when dirt and salt sit on the surface. For best results, use ceramic-safe wash products for regular maintenance. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners to preserve the coating's glossy finish and protective properties.
.
Common Myths and Misconceptions
Ceramic Coatings are scratch-proof, last forever, and maintenance-free. All of these are myths and not true. However, maintenance is significantly simplified and proper maintenance greatly increases the ceramic's lifespan.
